Spur went to the bridge just 3 weeks shy of his 15th birthday. We miss his Bumble antics every day.
Spur was chosen from a litter by talented working parents and grandparents. Spur began training as a sheepdog, but neither of us was enjoying it much, he being very soft with a lot of eye and a hard grip and me always worrying about injured sheep. In another trainer's hands, he may have done much better, but I was a beginner and didn't know what to make of his volatile behavior, or how to solve the problems that were fast developing!
However, a Border Collie needs to do something, so we began agility training when he was 2 years old. Two years later, he received his AAC Starters Title in one weekend, and in fall earned his USDAA AD title. He went on to complete his AAC Advanced Agility Dog title early the next spring, and was on his way to completing his Masters title when back problems forced Spur into early retirement from agility.
At age 13, he suffered a bout of vestibular disease, but continued to enjoy life, never missing a hike or an opportunity to go to the barn. He adapted to his head tilt and balanced just fine. In these later years, Spur was nicknamed "The Bumble" (after the Rudolf the Red Nosed Reindeer character) by an adoring fan. For those that know Spur, this was a highly suitable nickname!
