Jess was a gift from Alex McKinven; a bitch pup of his own breeding (Cessnock Jan x Imp. Glen Tweed). Starting out as a tiny, shy pup that hid in the back corner of the pen, Jess quickly became a confident, bold dog who tested my limits as a complete beginner in the world of sheepdog training.
Her impressive pedigree is full of British National winners and International Supreme Champions and it was her hard wired talent, and not my training skills, that ever caused us to place in a trial. Jess liked to do everything a top speed and was a very pushy worker - a lot of dog for me at the time and still would be today!
Jess had two attacks of Vestibular Syndrome at age 13, leaving her with a marked head tilt and lurching gait. But she was still game to go for hikes even at age 16. Then one sad June day in 2012, Jess, aged 17 years, told me she was done. She is buried beside Kap on the hill overlooking the swimming hole, with a pretty wind chime to mark her place.
